Cupressus pygmaea (Pygmy Cypress). Included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 1B.2 (rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere). The species is called pygmy because it was first described from the pygmy forests growing on podzolized soils atop a hardpan in Mendocino County. In those conditions the species grows to a meter or two in height. Specimens found on better soils grow to 50 meters in height. The one in Regional Parks Botanic Garden is approaching 30 meters. The pollen cones shown measure about 5 mm in lengths. The plant that provided the material for this photographs grow at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
