c/n 11.
Only 71 examples of this mixed-power fighter were produced before WW2 ended. The US Navy’s first jet-powered aircraft (with a Wright R-1820 up front for good measure) they remained in service until 1947.
This is the sole surviving example and went to NASA Ames Research Centre for testing at the end of its Navy service. It later ended up in a technical school before being saved by Ed Maloney in the 1960’s. It was fully restored and painted in a ‘TEST’ colour scheme in 2009, and is now on display in the ‘USS Enterprise CV-6’ hangar at the Planes of Fame Museum,
Chino, California, USA.
