This P-38 crashed near its home base at RAF Goxhill on 29th April 1944 while flying as part of the 496th Flying Training Group, USAAC.
The port propeller ran away and control was lost but the pilot, 2nd Lt Chester F Gerrick, was able to bail out. He survived although he is believed to have suffered a broken neck in the incident.
The wreckage, including both engines, was recovered by the Lincolnshire Aircraft Recovery Group and is on display (incorrectly marked as 42-967211) at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre.
