DeWitt Clintonの発音表記について[編集]

次の理由により、「ドゥヴィット・クリントン」ではなく「デウィット・クリントン」としました。

  • クリントンは旧オランダ植民地を起源とするニューヨークに根拠を持った政治一家であり、DeWitt Clinton (March 2, 1769 Napanoch, New York – February 11, 1828 Albany, New York) の父であり、副大統領となったジョージ・クリントンの兄であるJames Clintonはオランダ家系であるMary DeWittを妻としたことで、Simeon De Wittを甥としました。Simeon De Wittより13年後に生まれた次男である（現在ではDewittと綴られることもある）DeWittは妻のオランダ家系の実家の姓であるDe Wittに基づき命名されたと断定してよいかと思います。

  • 姓で用いられる「De」は日本語では連体格となる格助詞の「の」を意味し、オランダ家系で姓に用いられる「De」はもちろんドイツ語圏に属するオランダ語由来ですが、実はドイツ語圏ではなくフランス語圏での用法が源流で、日本語では「ド」または「デ」と表記するのが一般的であり、オランダ語の原音主義によるならば「デ」と書かれるものだそうです。また、Ｗの音をドイツ語風に「ヴィ」と表記するかどうかについては「vとwの中間の音」とのことで、仮名書きは「ヴ」「ウ」のいずれもがあるとのことです。
